One major new feature in the 2008 release is Connected Services, which includes
live traffic information as well as updated gas prices for areas covered by the
MSN Direct network (click here for coverage information).
Microsoft Streets & Trips 2008 with a one-year subscription to Connected
Services includes a combination GPS/MSN Direct USB receiver.
A much-awaited update to Streets & Trips is support for 3D perspective views;
It's finally included, you get a bird's-eye view of your maps, since the
software supports 3D North and 3D track-up views.
After you activate the MSN Direct receiver included with this Connected
Services–enabled model, you'll start receiving data within minutes. The
Connected Services pane allows you to select which services to display on the
map. You can then choose to view Normal (green), Moderate (yellow), or Heavy
(red) traffic incidents, and construction, as well as lower or (however
undesirable) higher gas prices. In a busy metropolitan area, it's a good idea to
suppress some of the data that's displayed, since there's so much of it: If you
enable all possible fields, you'll end up with a very cluttered screen.
Streets & Trips 2008 with GPS retains the same basic navigation panes as
found in other recent versions of the software. You have the option of viewing
the map in full-screen mode, or you can add a list view of turn-by-turn
directions above the map and a driving guidance pane below the map.
You can search the POI (point of interest) database in a number of different
ways. If you don't have a trip routed, you can search for POIs within a
specified radius. If you do have an active route, you have the ability to search
for POIs along the entire path, near a selected driving instruction, near the
starting point, or near the endpoint.
